Cefzil Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Cefprozil

Cefprozil belongs to a group of antibiotics known as cephalosporins. They kill bacteria by interfering with the ability of bacteria to form cell walls. CEFPROZIL (Cefzil®) is a cephalosporin antibiotic. It is used to treats many kinds of infections, including those of the respiratory tract, skin, ears.

Cefzil Dosage

  • For the treatment of Throat and Respiratory Tract Infections, the usual dose is 500 milligrams and you should be taken once or twice a day for 10 days.
  • For Sinus Infection, the usual dose is 250 milligrams every 12 hours for 10 days and for severe infections the dose is 500 milligrams.
  • For the treatment of Skin Infections, the dosage is usually either 250 milligrams taken 2 times a day, or 500 milligrams taken once or twice a day for 10 days.

Uses of Cefzil

This medication is a cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections.

Side Effects of Cefzil

If you are using Cefzil, then discuss the side effects of Cefzil with your doctor and if you feel any develop or change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Side effects may include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • confusion
  • diaper rash
  • diarrhea
  • difficulty sleeping
  • dizziness
  • genital itching
  • headache
  • hives
  • hyperactivity
  • nervousness
  • rash
  • sleepiness

Warnings and precautions before taking Cefzil:

  • You should use Cefzil with caution if you are taking a strong diuretic, or if you have stomach and intestinal disease, particularly colitis.
  • You should tell your doctor your medical conditions, especially if you have kidney problems, colitis or other stomach problems, allergies
  • While you are taking Cefzil and you develop any new infections known as superinfections, then talk to your doctor. Because you may need to be treated with a different antibiotic.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with Cefzil, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of Cefzil. Discuss with your doctor before combining Cefzil with the following:

  • Certain other antibiotics such as Amikin
  • Probenecid (Benemid)
  • Oral contraceptives
  • Propantheline (Pro-Banthine)
  • Certain potent diuretics such as Edecrin and Lasix
Overdose

After taking Cefzil, if you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of a Cefzil overdose include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Seizures
  • Numbness
  • Tingling of the arms and legs
