Panic Disorder

Panic disorder (PD) occurs in up to 25% of ED patients with chest pain. The quality of pain is often indistinguishable from ischemic pain. Since patients with PD often have coexistent CAD, a diagnosis of panic disorder is infrequently made in the ED. Many patients with panic disorder have coexisting symptoms of depression, including suicidal ideation (10%).

Causes

  • The main cause of panic attacks is Hypoglycemia.
  • Other factors such as stressful life events, environment may also cause panic disorder.
  • Several factors such as Heredity, stress can cause panic disoreder.

Symptoms

  • Chest pain
  • Dyspnea
  • Palpitations
  • Dizziness
  • Sweating
  • Trembling
  • Fear of losing control
  • Fear of dying
  • Acral paresthesias
  • Prior history of similar events
  • Fear of additional attacks

Signs

  • Tachycardia
  • Tachypnea
  • Normal examination

Treatment

  • Treatment for panic disorder includes medications and a type of psychotherapy known as cognitive-behavioral therapy, In which during sessions with your psychiatrist or psychologist, you learn to better understand your panic attacks and how to deal with them.
  • For the treatment of panic disorder, pharmacotherapy medications typically used to treat patients with anxiety disorders benzodiazepines, antidepressants and newer compounds such as buspirone.
