Calcaneus Fracture
Calcaneus fracture is usually caused by a fall or jump and may
result from twisting.
Causes
- Trauma is the main cause of fractures. Trauma-related causes of fracture such as include Vehicle accidents, falls, sports injuries and violence.
- Repetitive stress are also the main cause of fracture and result in stress fractures. These fracture are common among athletes and workers who perform intense physical labor.
- If you have medical condition such as osteoporosis, it may weakens the bones, causing them to be more fragile and prone to fracture.
Signs
- Local swelling and tenderness
- Unable to bear weight
Treatment
- For the treatment of calcaneus fracture, it require a period of rest and partial to complete immobilization. Treatment options such as include hard casts or removable cam walkers. It is not unusual to find calcaneal fractures that are symptomatic up to 4-6 months post injury.
- In which conservative treatment, it includes the use of shoe supports and a limited number of local corticosteroid injections. As in plantar fasciitis, surgery is a last resort.
- Calcaneus fracture can be treated by applying an ice pack for the first few minutes after injury.
- Mostly this type of condition is treated conservatively with rest, NSAIDs and physical therapy.
