Cervical Spine Disc Herniation

The backbone, or spine, is composed of a series of connected bones is known as "vertebrae". The vertebrae surround the spinal cord and also protect from damage. Vertebrae are connected by a disc and two small joints known as "facet" joints. Disc and facet joints allow for movements of the vertebrae and you can rotate your neck and back through this vertebrae. Disc is made of a tough outer layer known as "annulus fibrosus". and a gel-like center known as "nucleus pulposus." If they become damaged, they may break open, is known as herniated or slipped disc. Herniated discs may occur in any part of the spine, but mostly it may occur in the neck (cervical) and lower back (lumbar) spine.

Causes

  • Cervical spine disc herniation may also occur due to sharp bending or twisting movement, or from improperly lifting a heavy object.
  • Herniated disc may also occur due to wear and tear of the disc is also known as disc degeneration.
  • Herniated disc also may result from injuries to the spine, it may cause tiny tears or cracks in the outer layer of the disc.

Symptoms

  • Neck pain that may radiate to the scalp, shoulder, or down an extremity in a radicular pattern

Signs

  • Weakness or sensory deficit of the upper extremities
  • Fasciculations, loss of deep tendon reflexes, and atrophy of muscles in the affected nerve distribution have also been described.

Treatment

  • You can use conservative treatments for cervical spine disc herniation, it includes physical therapy, chiropractic treatments, and manual traction. In which physical therapy, exercises to help relieve the pressure on the nerve root and you can used chiropractic treatments for manual manipulation and it also help to relieve the pressure on the nerve root.
  • You should use non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication for treatment.
  • You can also used course of rehabilitation develop by physical therapist based on successful modes of treatment, such as include traction, ultrasound, electrical muscle stimulation, whirlpool. It is beneficial to herniated disk patients.
