Colonic Diverticulitis
Diverticulitis is generally a disease of older adults and typically presents with left lower quadrant pain and tenderness, similar to the right-sided pain and tenderness of appendicitis.
Causes
- If you are eating foods that have low-fiber, then it may cause colonic diverticulitis. It is the highest risk factor. Low-fiber diet forms low-bulk stool and that lead to increased segmentation of the colon during propulsion, causing increased intraluminal pressure and formation of diverticula.
- High fat and beef diets may also cause diverticular disease.
- If your colonic wall strength is defected, then it may also cause that condition.
- Mostly the diverticulitis occurs, when diverticula become infected or inflamed. Doctors are not certain what causes the infection. But It may begin when stool or bacteria are caught in the diverticula.
Symptoms
- Abdominal pain, usually in the left lower quadrant ++++
- Nausea and vomiting
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
Signs
- Left lower quadrant tenderness, guarding, rebound
- Fever
- General peritonitis with tachycardia, high fever, and sepsis if colonic perforation occurs
Treatment
- You can treat diverticulosis with symptoms usually. Because this therapy is designed to soften stools and it help them pass faster. It also removes the conditions that may cause diverticula such as including high-fiber diet, mild pain medications.
- For the treatment of diverticulitis, antibiotics will be prescribed, and the doctor may recommend a liquid diet and bed rest. Because it help to recover the colon.
