Ovarian Torsion

Ovarian torsion is a twisting of an ovary that compromises ovarian blood supply, leading to ovarian infarction if not rapidly diagnosed and treated.

Causes

  • Several factors that may cause ovarian cysts such as include Irregular menstrual cycles, Increased upper body fat distribution, Early menstruation (11 years or younger), Infertility, Hypothyroidism or hormonal imbalance, Tamoxifen therapy for breast cancer.
  • Some of the possible causes of Ovarian cysts are included Endometriosis( it may cause Endometriomas), Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
  • Functional cysts arise from either the follicle or the corpus luteum. Follicular cysts develop when ovulation does not occur, and the follicle continues to grow. Functional cysts can also occur if the corpus luteum persists after ovulation beyond its normal 2-week phase.

Symptoms

  • Abrupt onset of severe unilateral or nonlocalized lower abdominal or pelvic pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Recurrent episodes
  • Mild fever
  • Urinary symptoms

Signs

  • Unilateral lower abdominal or pelvic tenderness, tender adnexal mass +++
  • Progression to peritoneal signs

Treatment

  • Treatments for Ovarian cysts is Watchful waiting, in which some cysts cause no problem and may even shrink or disappear.
  • Another treatment by using birth control pills to stops ovulation and may affect the cyst and/or prevent new ones.
  • You can also remove cyst Surgical cyst, In which resolves symptoms and then avoids the risk of ovarian cancer.
  • The treatment of ovarian cysts depends on a number of factors such as including age of the woman, size of the cyst, type of cyst as determined by ultrasound (simple or complex), level of CA-125 and the presence or not of symptoms.
