Diabinese Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Chlorpropamide

Chlorpropamide is in a class of drugs known as sulfonylureas. CHLORPROPAMIDE (Diabinese®) is used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus. Chlorpropamide increases the amount of insulin that are released from the pancreas and also helps your body to use insulin more efficiently. Diabetes occurs when the body fails to produce enough insulin. Insulin work by helping sugar penetrate the cell wall so it can be used by the cell. There are two forms of diabetes: type 1 insulin-dependent and type 2 non-insulin-dependent.

Diabinese Dosage

  • The usual dose for stable, middle-aged, non-insulin-dependent diabetics is 250 milligrams. After 5 to 7 days, your doctor may adjust this dosage in increments of 50 to 125 milligrams every 3 to 5 days to achieve the best benefit.
  • People who are old, malnourished, or debilitated and those with impaired kidney and liver function, then usually take an initial dose of 100 to 125 milligrams.

Uses of Diabinese

  • Chlorpropamide is used along with a proper diet and exercise program to control high blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes.
  • It is also used for other medical conditions those are listed in the medication guide.

Side Effects of Diabinese

If you are using Diabinese, then discuss the side effects of Diabinese with your doctor and if you feel any develop or change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Side effects may include:

  • Diarrhea
  • hunger
  • itching
  • loss of appetite
  • nausea
  • stomach upset vomiting

Warnings and precautions before taking Diabinese:

  • Before taking chlorpropamide, you should tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it or to other sulfonylurea drugs or if you have any other allergies.
  • You should tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, before using this medication especially if you have kidney disease, liver disease, thyroid problems, poor diet, irregular eating patterns, certain hormonal conditions, mineral imbalance.
  • If you are taking Diabinese, then you may feel blurred vision, dizziness, or drowsiness due to extremely low or high blood sugar levels. So use caution engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with Diabinese, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of Diabinese. Discuss with your doctor before combining Diabinese with the following:

  • Anabolic steroids
  • Aspirin in large doses
  • Barbiturates such as Seconal
  • Coumarin (Coumadin)
  • Diuretics such as Diuril and HydroDIURIL
  • Epinephrine (EpiPen)
  • Isoniazid (Nydrazid)
  • Major tranquilizers such as Mellaril and Thorazine
  • Nicotinic acid (Niacor, Niaspan)
  • Oral contraceptives
  • Probenecid (Benemid)
  • Thyroid medications such as Synthroid
Overdose

After taking Diabinese, if you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of a Diabinese overdose include:

  • hunger
  • nausea
  • anxiety
  • cold sweats
  • weakness
  • drowsiness
  • unconsciousness
