Suprax Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Cefixime

Cefixime belongs to a group of antibiotics known as the cephalosporins. Suprax, a cephalosporin antibiotic, is used to treat bacterial infections of the chest, ears, urinary tract, and throat and for uncomplicated gonorrhea. Cefixime fights bacteria in the body.

Suprax Dosage

  • For Infections Other Than Gonorrhea, the usual adult dose is 400 milligrams daily. This may be taken as a single 400-milligram tablet once a day or as a 200-milligram tablet every 12 hours. If you have kidney disease, the dose may be lower.
  • If your child has a middle ear infection, then your doctor will probably prescribe Suprax suspension. The tablet form is less effective against this type of infection.

Uses of Suprax

  • Cefixime is used to treat many different types of bacterial infections such as bronchitis, tonsillitis, ear infections, skin infections, gonorrhea, and urinary tract infections.
  • Cefixime may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

Side Effects of Suprax

If you are using Suprax, then discuss the side effects of Suprax with your doctor and if you feel any develop or change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe to continue using Suprax. Side effects may include:

  • gas
  • indigestion
  • loose stools
  • mild diarrhea
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • Bleeding
  • colitis
  • fever
  • hives
  • itching
  • kidney failure
  • severe diarrhea
  • swollen face

Warnings and precautions before taking Suprax:

  • If you have stomach or intestinal disease such as colitis, then you should be checked with your doctor before taking Suprax.
  • If you have a kidney disorder, check with your doctor before taking Suprax. You may need a reduced dose of this medication because of your medical condition.
  • If you have had allergic reactions to penicillins or other cephalosporin antibiotics, then you should tell your doctor.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with Suprax, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of Suprax. Because Suprax and the seizure medication Tegretol are used together, then amount of Tegretol in the bloodstream may show an increase and suprax may also increase the effect of anticlotting drugs such as Coumadin.

Overdose

After taking Suprax, If you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of Suprax overdose may include:

  • Blood in the urine
  • diarrhea
  • nausea
  • upper abdominal pain
