Restasis Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Cyclosporine

CYCLOSPORINE ophthalmic emulsion (Restasis™) belongs to a class of medicines known as immunosuppressants. Cyclosporine ophthalmic may reduce inflammation in the eye(s). It is used to treat dry eyes due to an eye condition known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Restasis works by increasing the amount of tears you make.

Restasis Dosage

The usual dose for the treatment of inflammation in the eye(s) is one drop in each affected eye twice a day, about 12 hours apart.

Uses of Restasis

  • Cyclosporine ophthalmic is used to treat chronic dry eye that may be caused by inflammation.
  • It may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

Side Effects of Restasis

If you are using Restasis, then discuss the side effects of Restasis with your doctor and if you feel any develop or change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe to continue using Restasis. Side effects may include:

  • Eye burning
  • redness
  • tearing
  • discharge
  • pain
  • itching
  • stinging
  • visual blurring

Warnings and precautions before taking Restasis:

  • You should not be used this medication if you have certain medical conditions. If you have an eye infection, then consult your doctor or pharmacist before using this medicine.
  • Before using this medicine, you should tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history especially if you have any allergies.
  • If you are using Restasis medicine, then this drug may cause blurred vision. So use caution engaging in activities requiring clear vision such as driving or using machinery.
  • If you wear contact lenses, then talk to your doctor before using Restasis medicine. Because, people with reduced tear production generally should not wear contact lenses.

Drug Interaction:- If you are using other eye products, especially those that contain anti-inflammatory agents with Restasis, then you should tell your doctor. You should also tell your doctor if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. Because these may affect the way your medicine works. So check with your doctor before stopping or starting any of your medicines.

Overdose

An overdose of this medication is unlikely to occur. If you do suspect an overdose, then wash the eye with water. If the drops have been ingested, then contact your doctor immediately.
