Synarel Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Nafarelin acetate

NAFARELIN (Synarel®) is a man-made protein that is like a hormone in the body known as gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). It helps to regulate the menstrual cycle, fertility, and sexual development during puberty. Gonadotrophin releasing hormone acts on a gland in the brain to control the production and release of other hormones, particularly those that act on the ovaries and testes.

Synarel Dosage

  • The usual dosage of Synarel is 400 micrograms daily, divided into 2 doses one spray (200 micrograms) into one nostril in the morning and one spray into the other nostril in the evening. You should start your treatment between days 2 and 4 of your menstrual cycle.
  • If the above dosage does not stop your menstrual period after 2 months of treatment, then your doctor may increase your dosage to 800 micrograms daily one spray into each nostril in the morning and a second spray into each nostril in the evening.

Uses of Synarel

  • Synarel is used to treat the symptoms of endometriosis such as menstrual cramps or low back pain during menstruation, painful intercourse, painful bowel movements, and abnormal and heavy menstrual bleeding.
  • This medication is also used in children to treat central precocious puberty.

Side Effects of Synarel

If you are using Synarel, then discuss the side effects of Synarel with your doctor and if you feel any develop or change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe to continue using Synarel. Side effects may include:

  • Acne
  • depression
  • dry skin
  • hair growth
  • insomnia
  • muscle pain
  • nasal irritation
  • oily skin
  • rapidly shifting or changing emotions
  • swelling due to fluid retention
  • vaginal dryness
  • weight gain

Warnings and precautions before taking Synarel:

  • This medicine is to be sprayed into the nostril(s) only.
  • Synarel may cause a small amount of bone loss. If you consume large amounts of alcohol, smoke, have a strong family history of osteoporosis, or use drugs that can reduce bone mass such as anticonvulsants or steroids, then discuss your condition with your doctor before using Synarel medicine.
  • Synarel may cause vaginal dryness. If this problem occur, especially during sexual intercourse, then you may want to use a vaginal lubricant.
  • Your menstrual periods should stop completely during Synarel therapy. If you continue to bleed regularly, or if you spot or bleed between periods, inform your doctor immediately. Vaginal bleeding may occur if you are not following your doctor's instructions carefully or if you need a higher dosage of Synarel.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with Synarel, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of Synarel. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Synarel with the following:

  • cimetidine
  • herbal or dietary supplements, like black cohosh, chasteberry, or DHEA
  • female hormones, like estrogen
  • male hormones, like testosterone
  • methyldopa
  • metoclopramide
  • prasterone
  • some medicines for mood or mental problems
  • reserpine
  • nasal spray decongestants, such as phenylephrine
Overdose

Symptoms of a nafarelin nasal overdose are not known. But after taking Synarel, If you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately.
