Evista Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Raloxifene hydrochloride

RALOXIFENE (Evista®) reduces the amount of calcium lost from bones. It also helps to prevent bone loss and to increase normal healthy bone formation in patients with osteoporosis. Raloxifene does not reduce hot flashes that are associated with estrogen deficiency. Evista is prescribed to treat and prevent osteoporosis, the brittle-bone disease that strikes some women after menopause.

Evista Dosage

The usual dosage is one 60-milligram tablet once a day.

Uses of Evista

  • Raloxifene is used to treat and prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.
  • Raloxifene may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

Side Effects of Evista

If you are using Evista, then discuss the side effects of Evista with your doctor and if you feel any develop or change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe to continue using Evista. Side effects may include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • arthritis
  • depression
  • diarrhea
  • dizziness
  • increased cough
  • indigestion
  • infection
  • insomnia
  • joint pain
  • leg cramps
  • muscle ache

Warnings and precautions before taking Evista:

  • You should use Evista with caution if you have congestive heart failure, a liver condition, or cancer.
  • If you are able to become pregnant, stop using the medicine immediately if you think you have become pregnant and check with your doctor. Raloxifene is recommended for women who are past menopause.
  • You should tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products including anticoagulants such as warfarin, cholestyramine, diazepam, diazoxide, and estrogen. Your doctor may need to change the doses of your medications or monitor you carefully for side effects
  • If you are having surgery such as dental surgery, then you should tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking raloxifene.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with Evista, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of Evista. Discuss with your doctor before combining Evista with the following:

  • Cholestyramine (Questran)
  • Diazepam (Valium)
  • Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, Nuprin)
  • Indomethacin (Indocin)
  • Naproxen (Aleve, Anaprox, Naprosyn)
  • Warfarin (Coumadin)
Overdose

Symptoms of a raloxifene overdose are not known. But after taking Evista, If you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately.
