Zomig Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Zolmitriptan

Zomig belongs to a group of medicines also known as "triptans". Zomig is a drug for treating migraine headaches. Migraine headaches are result from dilation of the blood vessels in the brain. Zomig work by causing vasoconstriction (narrowing) of blood vessels (arteries and veins) around the brain. Zomig also reduces the release of substances in the body that may causes headache pain, nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and other migraine symptoms.

Zomig Dosage

  • For adults, the starting dose is no more than 2.5 milligrams. If the headache returns, then dose may be repeated after 2 hours. Dosage should not exceed 10 milligrams in a day. If you have liver disease, then your doctor will prescribe a lower dose and closely monitor your blood pressure.
  • The safety and effectiveness of Zomig have not been established in children and adults over 65.

Uses of Zomig

  • Zomig is used to treat vascular headaches such as migraines. Zomig will not prevent migraines. It will only treat a migraine that is already occurring.
  • Zomig may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

Side Effects of Zomig

If you are using Zomig, then discuss the side effects of Zomig with your doctor and if you feel any develop or change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe to continue using Zomig. Side effects may include:

  • Chest pain or tightness
  • weakness
  • cold sensation
  • warm sensation
  • dizziness
  • throat pain or tightness
  • drowsiness
  • sweating
  • skin tingling
  • dry mouth
  • pain
  • feeling of heaviness in the chest or elsewhere

Warnings and precautions before taking Zomig:

  • If you have liver or kidney disease, then you should be use Zomig with caution. Because these conditions could alter the effect of the drug. If you have a history of seizures, make sure the doctor is aware of it.
  • If you feel or develop shortness of breath, wheezing, a throbbing heartbeat, swelling of the eyelids, face, or lips, or a skin rash, skin lumps, or hives after taking Zomig, then call your doctor immediately, and do not start any drug without talking with your doctor.
  • Before taking zolmitriptan, you should tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to other "triptan" migraine drugs; or if you have any other allergies.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with Zomig, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of Zomig. So discuss with your doctor before combining Zomig with the following:

  • Acetaminophen (Tylenol)
  • Cimetidine (Tagamet)
  • Fluoxetine (Prozac)
  • Fluvoxamine (Luvox)
  • Oral contraceptives
  • Paroxetine (Paxil)
  • Propranolol (Inderal)
  • Sertraline (Zoloft)
Overdose

Symptoms of a Zomig overdose are not well known but may include sedation. After taking Zomig, If you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately.
