Normodyne Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Labetalol hydrochloride

LABETALOL (Normodyne®, Trandate®) belongs to a group of medicines known as beta-blockers. Beta-blockers reduce the workload on the heart and also help it to beat more regularly. Labetalol controls the high blood pressure, but does not cure. Normodyne is effective when used alone or in combination with other high blood pressure medications especially thiazide diuretics such as HydroDIURIL and "loop" diuretics such as Lasix.

Normodyne Dosage

  • The usual starting dose for adults is 100 milligrams, 2 times per day, alone or with a diuretic drug. After 2 to 3 days of checking your blood pressure, your doctor may increase your dose by 100 milligrams, 2 times per day, at intervals of 2 to 3 days.
  • For older adults, the usual starting dose is the same as younger people is 100 milligrams twice a day. Your doctor may increase the dose, but usually to no more than 200 milligrams twice a day.

Uses of Normodyne

  • Normodyne medicine is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension).
  • Labetalol may also be used for chest pain (angina).

Side Effects of Normodyne

If you are using Normodyne, then discuss the side effects of Normodyne with your doctor and if you feel any develop or change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe to continue using Normodyne. Side effects may include:

  • Dizziness
  • Anaphylaxis
  • angioedema
  • changes in taste
  • depression
  • diarrhea
  • dry eyes
  • ejaculation failure
  • hair loss
  • hives

Warnings and precautions before taking Normodyne:

  • You should tell your doctor your medical history especially if you have liver problems, heart problems, lung disease, diabetes, any allergies.
  • If you are taking Normodyne, then this drug may make you dizzy. So use caution when doing activities that require alertness such as driving or using machinery.
  • You should not be stopped Normodyne suddenly. Because this can cause chest pain and heart attack. Dosage should be gradually reduced.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with Normodyne, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of Normodyne. So first consult to your doctor before combining Normodyne medicine with the following drugs.

  • Antidepressant medications such as Elavil
  • Cimetidine (Tagamet)
  • Diabetes drugs such as Micronase
  • Insulin
  • Nitroglycerin products such as Transderm-Nitro
  • Ritodrine (Yutopar)
  • Verapamil (Calan)
Overdose

After taking Normodyne, If you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of Normodyne overdose may include:

  • Dizziness when standing up
  • severely low blood pressure
  • severely slow heartbeat
