Nolvadex Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Tamoxifen citrate

TAMOXIFEN (Nolvadex®) blocks the effects of estrogen hormone in the body. Tamoxifen is used to treat breast cancer in women or men. This drug may reduce the chance of breast cancer coming back in women that are previously treated with surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy. It also has proved effective when cancer has spread to other parts of the body.

Nolvadex Dosage

  • For Breast Cancer Treatment, the uaual dosage ranges from 20 to 40 milligrams. If you are taking more than 20 milligrams a day, then your doctor will have you divide the total into 2 smaller doses taken in the morning and evening.
  • For Ductal Carcinoma in Situ, the recommended dose is 20 milligrams once daily for 5 years.

Uses of Nolvadex

  • Tamoxifen is used to treat and prevent some types of breast cancer that require estrogen to grow.
  • This medication may also be used short-term to treat girls age 2 -10 years of age who have premature puberty.
  • Tamoxifen may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

Side Effects of Nolvadex

If you are using Nolvadex, then discuss the side effects of Nolvadex with your doctor and if you feel any develop or change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe to continue using Nolvadex. Side effects may include:

  • Hot flashes
  • vaginal discharge
  • nausea
  • vaginal bleeding
  • vomiting Bone pain
  • tumor pain
  • diarrhea
  • skin rash
  • menstrual irregularities

Warnings and precautions before taking Nolvadex:

  • You should tell your doctor your medical conditions especially if you have eye problems, blood disorders, cancers, liver disease, allergies.
  • If you feel or develop visual problems while taking Nolvadex, then you should tell your doctor immediately.
  • Nolvadex may produce an abnormally high level of calcium in the blood. Symptoms include muscle pain and weakness, loss of appetite, and, if severe, kidney failure. If you develop any change in intensity or experience any of these symptoms, notify your doctor as soon as possible.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with Nolvadex, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of Nolvadex. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Nolvadex with the following:

  • Aminoglutethimide (Cytadren)
  • Rifampin (Rifadin)
  • Blood-thinning drugs such as Coumadin
  • Phenobarbital
  • Bromocriptine (Parlodel)
  • Letrozole (Femara)
  • Cancer drugs such as Cytoxan
Overdose

After taking Nolvadex, If you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of Nolvadex overdose may include:

  • Dizziness
  • overactive reflexes
  • tremor
