Norgesic Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Orphenadrine citrate, Aspirin, Caffeine

Aspirin is in a class of drugs known as salicylates. It work by reducing substances in the body that may cause pain and inflammation. It is also used to reduce pain, inflammation, and fever. Caffeine is used in this combination to increase the pain relieving effects of aspirin and orphenadrine. Orphenadrine is a muscle relaxant. It works by blocking nerve impulses that are sent to the brain.

Norgesic Dosage

  • For adults, the usual dose of Norgesic is 1 to 2 tablets taken 3 or 4 times a day.
  • The usual dosage of Norgesic Forte, which is exactly twice the strength of Norgesic. So, the usual dose is one-half to 1 tablet, taken 3 or 4 times per day.

Uses of Norgesic

  • Norgesic is used to treat tension headache and headaches that caused by spasm of the muscles in the back of your head and neck.
  • It is also used to help certain muscles in your body and to relieve the pain and discomfort that may caused by sprains, strains or other injury to your muscles.
  • Aspirin/ caffeine/ orphenadrine may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

Side Effects of Norgesic

If you are using Norgesic, then discuss the side effects of Norgesic with your doctor and if you feel any develop or change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe to continue using Norgesic. Side effects may include:

  • Blurred vision
  • weakness
  • confusion
  • vomiting
  • constipation
  • stomach and intestinal bleeding
  • difficulty in urinating
  • drowsiness
  • light-headedness
  • dry mouth
  • fainting
  • hives
  • hallucinations
  • headache

Warnings and precautions before taking Norgesic:

  • Because Norgesic contains aspirin, then you should be careful taking it if you have a peptic ulcer or problems with blood clotting.
  • If you are 65 or older, then you should be used this medicine with caution. Because it may cause severe drowsiness or dizziness.
  • You should be avoided aspirin, aspirin-containing products, ibuprofen or like products, other blood thinners such as warfarin, ticlopidine, clopidogrel.
  • Limit caffeine such as tea, coffee, cola and chocolate intake. If you will use with this medicine, then it may cause nervousness, shakiness, rapid heartbeats, and anxiety.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking Norgesic with certain other drugs, then effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Norgesic with propoxyphene (Darvon). Because the combination of Norgesic with other drugs may cause confusion, anxiety, and tremors.

Overdose

After taking Norgesic, If you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of Norgesic overdose may include:

  • headache
  • unconsciousness
  • ringing in the ears
  • clammy skin
  • nausea
  • cold
  • vomiting
  • seizures
  • diarrhea
  • decreased breathing
  • dry mouth
  • confusion
