Percodan Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Oxycodone with Aspirin

Percodan combines two pain-killing drugs: the narcotic analgesic oxycodone, and the common pain reliever aspirin and it is used to treat moderate to severe pain. Oxycodone (related to codeine) is in a class of drugs known as narcotic analgesics. It relieves pain. Aspirin is a less potent pain reliever, as well as an anti-inflammatory and a fever reducer. Aspirin increases the effects of oxycodone.

Percodan Dosage

The usual dose for the treatment of pain is one tablet every 6 hours as needed. Your doctor may adjust the dosage according to the severity of pain and your response to the drug. The maximum dose is 12 tablets per day.

Uses of Percodan

  • The combination, aspirin and oxycodone, is used to treat moderate-to-severe pain.
  • It is also used for other conditions those are listed in the medication guides.

Side Effects of Percodan

If you are using Percodan, then discuss the side effects of Percodan with your doctor and if you feel any develop or change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe to continue using Percodan. Side effects may include:

  • Constipation
  • dizziness
  • exaggerated feelings of well-being or sadness
  • itching
  • light-headedness
  • nausea
  • sedation
  • vomiting

Warnings and precautions before taking Percodan:

  • If you are taking percodan, then you may feel some dizzy, drowsiness. So do not perform any activities requiring alertness such as drive a car or operate machinery.
  • If you have any medical conditions such as abdominal disorders, a thyroid condition, Addison's disease, kidney problems, liver problems, an enlarged prostate, or difficulty urinating, then tell your doctor. You should be used Percodan with extra caution under these circumstances.
  • In children and teenagers who have a viral infection, the aspirin in Percodan can trigger a severe and even fatal disorder known as Reye's Syndrome. So do not give Percodan to any child with an illness such as flu or chickenpox.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with Percodan, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of Percodan. So first consult to your doctor before combining Percodan medicine with the following drugs.

  • Alcohol
  • Blood-thinning drugs such as Coumadin
  • Gout medications such as probenecid
  • Major tranquilizers such as Compazine, Stelazine, and Thorazine
  • Other narcotic pain killers such as Demerol and OxyContin
  • Promethazine (Phenergan)
  • Sleep aids such as Halcion or Seconal
  • Tranquilizers such as Valium and Xanax
Overdose

After taking Percodan, If you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of Percodan overdose may include:

  • slow breathing
  • seizures
  • dizziness
  • weakness
  • loss of consciousness
  • coma
  • confusion
  • tiredness
  • cold and clammy skin
  • small pupils
  • ringing in your ears
  • nausea
  • vomiting
