Restoril Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Temazepam

TEMAZEPAM (Restoril®) is in a class of drugs known as benzodiazepines. Temazepam affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and may cause insomnia or anxiety. Benzodiazepines belong to a group of medicines that slow down the central nervous system. Restoril is used for the relief of insomnia (difficulty in falling asleep, waking up frequently at night, or waking up early in the morning). Temazepam is a sleep aid used to treat sleeplessness and other sleeping problems.

Restoril Dosage

  • The usual dose is 15 milligrams at bedtime. But 7.5 milligrams may be all that is necessary, while some people may need 30 milligrams.
  • For older adults, the doctor will prescribe the smallest effective amount in order to avoid side effects such as oversedation, dizziness, confusion, and lack of muscle coordination. The usual dose for older adults is 7.5 milligrams.

Uses of Restoril

  • Temazepam is used to induce sleep and cause relaxation.
  • Temazepam may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

Side Effects of Restoril

If you are using Restoril, then discuss the side effects of Restoril with your doctor and if you feel any develop or change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe to continue using Restoril. Side effects may include:

  • Dizziness
  • drowsiness
  • fatigue
  • headache
  • depression
  • diarrhea
  • dry mouth
  • hallucinations
  • hangover
  • increased dreaming
  • lack of coordination

Warnings and precautions before taking Restoril:

  • After you stop taking Restoril, then you may have more trouble sleeping than you had before you started taking it. This is known as "rebound insomnia" and it will be clear up after 1 or 2 nights.
  • If you have kidney or liver problems or chronic lung disease, then you should tell your doctor.
  • If you are severely depressed or have suffered from severe depression, in the past, then consult your doctor before using this medication.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with Restoril, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of Restoril. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Restoril with the following:

  • Antihistamines such as Benadryl
  • Barbiturates such as phenobarbital and Seconal
  • Major tranquilizers such as Mellaril and Thorazine
  • Narcotic pain relievers such as Percocet and Demerol
  • Tranquilizers such as Valium and Xanax
Overdose

After taking Restoril, If you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of Restoril overdose may include:

  • Coma
  • confusion
  • diminished reflexes
  • low blood pressure
  • labored or difficult breathing
