Floxin Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Ofloxacin

OFLOXACIN (Floxin®) is an antibiotic. Ofloxacin is used to treat certain bacteria or stops their growth. It treats urinary tract, prostate, skin, urinary and respiratory tract infections, as well as certain sexually transmitted diseases. Floxin Otic solution is used to treat ear infections.

Floxin Dosage

  • For the treatment of worsening of chronic bronchitis, the usual dose is 400 milligrams every 12 hours for 10 days, for a total daily dose of 800 milligrams.
  • For the treatment of gonorrhea, the usual dose is 400 milligrams taken once.
  • For the treatment of sexually transmitted infections of the cervix or urethra, the usual dose is 300 milligrams every 12 hours for 7 days, for a total daily dose of 600 milligrams.

Uses of Floxin

  • Ofloxacin is used to treat outer ear infections and middle ear infections.
  • It is also used for other infections those are listed in the medication guide.

Side Effects of Floxin

If you are using Floxin, then discuss the side effects of Floxin with your doctor and if you feel any develop or change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe to continue using Floxin. Side effects may include:

  • Diarrhea
  • difficulty sleeping
  • dizziness
  • headache
  • itching of genital area in women
  • nausea
  • vaginal inflammation
  • vomiting

Warnings and precautions before taking Floxin:

  • Before using this medication, you should tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially if you have ear problems, two or more ear infections within 6 months.
  • Before taking this medication, you should tell your doctor your medical conditions such as epilepsy, kidney disease, tendon problems, nervous system disorders, liver disease, blood vessel problems, any drug allergies.
  • If you are taking Floxin tablets, then it may make you feel dizzy or light-headed. So be careful driving, operating machinery, or doing any activity that requires full mental alertness.
  • Never put Floxin eardrops in the eyes or mouth. When placed in the ear, then drops may cause dizziness if they have not been sufficiently warmed.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with Floxin, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of Floxin. Discuss with your doctor before combining Floxin with the following:

  • Antacids containing calcium, magnesium, or aluminum
  • Blood thinners such as Coumadin
  • Cyclosporine (Sandimmune, Neoral)
  • Didanosine (Videx)
  • Insulin
  • Multivitamins containing zinc
  • Probenecid (Benemid)
  • Sucralfate (Carafate)
  • Theophylline-containing drugs, such as Theo-Dur
Overdose

After taking Floxin, If you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of Floxin overdose may include:

  • Disorientation
  • dizziness
  • drowsiness
  • hot and cold flashes
  • nausea
  • slurring of speech
  • swelling and numbness in the face
